What About SMBs? How Do Virtualization and Cloud Apply?
Location: Room 1E15
Friday, October 5, 2012, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Virtualization has clear benefits for enterprises along with widespread adoption. But what about small to medium businesses? Do those benefits apply? Should SMBs do it themselves or should they look to service providers to take over? How does virtualization relate to the cloud and should SMBs be going straight to the cloud? And if so, should it be hosted private cloud or a public cloud? |

Cloud Business Patterns
Location: Room 1E08
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 3:30 PM-4:30 PM This session serves to address a gap in the industry of Cloud Business Patterns. A good mix of technology- or architecture-centric patterns – or Cloud IT or Architecture Patterns – exists from various sources. However, the prevailing literature on business-centric patterns – or Cloud Business Patterns – is scant. Cloud Business Patterns serve to express common business constructs, business behaviors, and business requirements which lend themselves to cloud based delivery and consumption, regardless of underlying technology choices or technology-centric patterns. Examples of technology-centric patterns are Virtual Machine Patterns and Virtual Desktop Patterns. Examples of Cloud Business Patterns are Broker Pattern, and App Store Pattern. The session reports on and extends on some of the work produced or is in evolution from the Working Group on Cloud Business Patterns at the Cloud Standards Customer Council (www.cloud-council.org). CSCC is hosted by the Object Management Group (OMG). CSCC is unique in representing the voice of the end user and customer – in the mix of technology vendors – with the mission to influence cloud standards produced by Standards Development Organizations. |

UC Interoperability
Location: Room 1E07
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 10:30 AM-11:30 AM The Unified Communications market is experiencing a familiar dynamic around multi-vendor interoperability: Vendors say they have it, customers say they don’t. So which is closer to the truth—how much interoperability is really out there? This session will help you understand the degree to which different vendors’ UC elements work together, and how much integration work has to be done to make products work together. Specifically, we’ll look at the issues of federation and interworking—which tend to be one-off arrangements between pairs of vendors—versus true interoperability, in which standards compliance allows for actual plug-and-play deployment of any vendor’s product into an existing system. Leading consultants/analysts will give you a detailed breakdown of which products interoperate, and where (if anywhere) there is true interoperability. |

Alternatives to the Spanning Tree Protocol
Location: Room 1E16
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 2:15 PM-3:15 PM The spanning tree protocol (STP) has been a mainstay of LAN design for well over a decade. One of the advantages of STP is that it ensures a loop-free topology for any bridged Ethernet local area network. One of the primary drawbacks of STP is that it only allows for a single active path between any two network nodes and that attribute of STP can severely limit the scalability of the LAN. The panelists on this session will debate the best alternatives to STP. Alternatives will include standards based approaches such as Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation Group, Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) and TRILL (Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links) as well as at least one proprietary approach. |

Location: Room 1E16
Friday, October 5, 2012, 10:15 AM-12:30 PM Software-defined networking (SDN) is one of the most written about topics in IT because it holds the promise to fundamentally change how networking is done. There is some question, however, about whether or not there is any substance behind SDNs or are they largely a media event? In this two-part session, the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) will describe both SDN and OpenFlow, including a discussion of the current status of the relevant standards and what changes you can expect to see over the next year. Jim Metzler will then present a detailed overview of how end users are approaching the deployment of SDN and he will also summarize the strategy of the leading SDN vendors. The biggest component of this session will be one or more end users describing why they implemented SDN, what they learned from their implementation and what their next steps are.

Low PUE = Green Data Center? Not So Fast...
Location: Room 1E07
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 3:30 PM-4:30 PM So much hype surrounds the data center’s PUE as a testament to green credentials. Theory goes, the lower the PUE, the greener the data center. But what is missing from that number? First off it doesn’t measure the total data center energy consumption – everything from the communications system to emergency lighting to powering the lunch rooms. Second, it doesn’t take into consideration the energy sources powering the data center. What happens if your data center is powered on green energy – is the PUE even relevant anymore? When the energy coming into the data center is 100% renewable the importance of the PUE diminishes and potentially changes the way we look at what really constitutes a green data center.
It’s no secret that data centers have an insatiable appetite for power…and finding a reliable source of available power is becoming a challenge as existing power grids are maxed-out with current demands. Moreover, finding a location that can meet green demands presents even more of a challenge. As a result, operators are starting to find greenfield opportunities in renewable power sources. By moving network commodity servers, like those used for the Cloud, to the most naturally efficient location, operators can meet demands and regulations while maximizing profits. |

Strategies for Securing the Network in Increasingly Complex Environments
Location: Room 1E09
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 10:30 AM-11:30 AM Network-based services that enable online transactions, information exchange and customer/constituent engagement are the critical information systems behind an increasing number of businesses. Underpinning all of these systems is the Internet infrastructure, a complex array of systems and protocols that enable the many Internet-based interactions we’ve come to take for granted. Beyond expanded scope and increasing complexity, the Internet infrastructure faces a growing number of threats, some systemic, others more targeted. A strategy that assures the availability and reliability of vital resources while protecting them and their data from malicious attack or breach should be at the core of any organization’s network operations and security plans. This session will explore some of the major trends related to both threats and security improvements around the Internet’s infrastructure, including Distributed Denial of Service Attacks, Domain Hijacking, Man-in-the-Middle Attacks, DNSSEC, and IPv6. |

Five Security Secrets Your IT Administrators Don’t Want You to Know
Location: Room 1E09
Friday, October 5, 2012, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM As valued members of your organization, IT administrators work every day to keep your infrastructure up and available. But in today’s rush to contain operational costs, your IT administrators could be taking more shortcuts than you’d expect. And perhaps no aspect of IT suffers more from cutting corners than security. In this session, cybersecurity expert Philip Lieberman will show that fundamentally, the security of each organization hinges on how well IT balances convenience with controls and accountability. All too often IT is given free rein to operate under its own rules when it comes to security and resists working under the same types of controls that apply to others in the organization. The session will demonstrate that those organizations that work to bring IT into balance – introducing accountability through segregation of duties and adequate auditing controls while providing sufficient resources and incentives to provide proactive security – often come out ahead. |

Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 1:30 PM-1:55 PM Collecting and analyzing massive amounts of social data in real time is no small task. In the open source world, there is never a shortage of choices. For us to serve up real-time and historical analysis of that data, we integrate Redis, Mongo, Infobright, and Cassandra. We map reduce, aggregate, TTL and shard in multiple data centers and data stores across AWS. Finally, we wrap that up into a Node.JS API for speed, consistent access patterns, and fault tolerance. This makes up a full data access and storage suite. To use each data store effectively, you need to know which tradeoffs to make and what each data storage layer excels at. This talk is the evolution of the architecture, tools, capabilities, and lessons learned for our version of Polyglottany through the eyes of open source. |

Taking Cloud to the Final Frontier – SDN and Network Virtualization - Presented by Rackspace Hosting
Location: Expo Hall, Room 1, Booth 1009
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 11:00 AM-11:45 AM Remember the movie "Tron"? In it, the main character's actions are limited to what the computer which he is trapped inside allowed. Until recently, this was also true about networking in the cloud: traditional networks were trapped in hardware implementations, bounded by the capabilities of switches and routers. Enter software-defined networking. SDNs allow you to break free of hardware contraints, by using software to define and build networks on demand, completing the trio of virtualization – compute, storage and networking. Come learn more about how this revolution in networking and cloud computing will shatter yet another barrier to entry for the cloud. |

Cloud, Social Media, VoIP, Oh My! : Managing Risks & Rewards of Emerging Technologies
Location: Room 1E07
Monday, October 1, 2012, 1:30 PM-4:30 PM It’s no surprise that the technology landscape is changing again. Emerging technologies like social media, cloud computing and Voice over IP (VoIP) change the way we do business and interact with the network. They are also forcing us to re-think how we protect our organization’s information. While it has always been a challenge to keep information from leaving with portable media, various cloud storage options have made it much easier to quickly share large quantities data worldwide. Other types of cloud computing have made it easy for different groups within an organization to start their own Web service, outside the realm of a traditional IT organization and its security requirements. Social media is extending the reach of organizations by allowing them to interact in more structured ways with their customers. This opens the door to a variety of challenges that are involved with social media, including inadvertently exposing internal discussions to a customer base or beyond. Finally, VoIP is helping to extend the worker’s desktop to the home and on the road and outside of the protections of the internal enterprise network.

The Impact of Cloud Computing on the Network
Location: Room 1E16
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 10:30 AM-11:30 AM The media is overflowing with discussions of the benefits of adopting cloud computing and enabling technologies such as virtualization. What has been missing from that discussion is an analysis of what has to happen to the network and the management of the network to enable them to support cloud computing. For example, the deployment of vSwitches will potentially result in IT organizations having to manage hundreds of new switches from multiple vendors. In addition, today’s WAN can’t effectively support the dynamic movement of VMs nor cloud bursting and most management tools and processes are focused on static not dynamic resources. In this session, Jim Metzler of Ashton, Metzler & Associates will describe in detail the set of challenges created by cloud computing and will also provide an overview of the emerging networking, optimization and management technologies that hold the potential to mitigate these challenges.
What are the Next Steps for WAN Optimization?
Location: Room 1E16
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 2:15 PM-3:15 PM Driven largely by the need to support the flow of information between branch offices and data centers, many IT organizations have implemented WAN optimization controller (WOC) functionality. On a going forward basis, IT organizations looking to implement WOC functionality have a number of fundamental questions that must be addressed. One such question is should they implement WOCs themselves or should they acquire the functionality from a cloud provider. Should the WOCs be hardware based or software based? What is the best way to optimize the performance of public cloud services? In this session, end users will discuss what they see as the future of WAN optimization and give you the insight into what they have done to leverage the emerging functionality.
Network Virtualization: What Is It and Is It Ready for Production Networks?
Location: Room 1E16
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 10:30 AM-11:30 AM The last few years has seen a significant adoption of server and storage virtualization. The network, however, has remained static. The good news is that we are now seeing the first steps towards virtualizing the network and network services.
How BYOD is Driving Change in the Campus Network
Location: Room 1E16
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 3:30 PM-4:30 PM While it doesn’t receive as much attention in the trade press as does the data center LAN, the campus LAN is also undergoing fundamental change. The drivers of change in the campus network include the requirement to support a significant increase in video traffic, the need to support the movement of virtual machines within the campus data center and the burgeoning movement to bring your own device (BYOD). The speakers in this session are end users who will discuss how their campus LANs are changing in general and what they are doing to support BYOD in particular.
OpenFlow and Software Defined Networks: What Are They and Why Do You Care?

IPv6 Transition
Location: Room 1E16
Friday, October 5, 2012, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM With the skyrocketing global demand for IP addresses to accommodate an explosion in the number of Web-enabled devices, IPv4 addresses are about to run out. The Internet Address Number Association (IANA) distributed the last large (/8) block of IPv4 addresses on February 3, 2011. Air Force Network Integration Center (AFNIC) engineers are leading the Air Force's transition from the current IPv4 addressing format to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), and are laying the groundwork to ensure the switch happens seamlessly. While the transition will remain transparent to users, IPv6 will ensure continued global communications and enable new capabilities by providing a vastly larger number of network addresses to support new, intelligent appliances, sensors, logistics tracking, and latest state-of-the-art technologies. This session will provide the conference audience with a detailed look at the Air Force's current efforts on IPv6 transition, and how IPv6 will impact many more networked items than just desktop computers. |

What’s Next in Data Centers?
Location: Room 1E07
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 2:15 PM-3:15 PM Initiatives like cloud computing, agile processes, and devops still run on servers, storage, and networking. Many cloud, agile, and devops proponents try to commoditize and minimize the value of underlying hardware - in fact someone still needs to build and manage the infrastructure to enable faster, better, and more simple IT. The technologies that will be used in data centers in the next 12 to 18 months will be significantly impacted by what you decide today. New technologies in servers, storage, and networking can have a positive impact regardless of your strategic initiatives. In this panel, we’ll discuss what is on the horizon in data center technologies and how you can leverage them. Bring your questions.

Integrating Communications with Business Apps
Location: Room 1E07
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 2:15 PM-3:15 PM Increasingly, voice and video communications can be embedded in applications that enterprise users work in throughout the day. This may consist of a plug-in or a presence indicator, from which the user can find and connect with those in their enterprise directory—and potentially even those outside the enterprise (where the two entities’ systems are federated). But are vendors really delivering on the potential of these “Communications Enabled Business Processes” (CEBP), and are enterprises ready to implement such integrations? In this session, you’ll learn how communications systems can be integrated with business applications; what the potential benefits of doing so might be for your enterprise; and how to go about implementing the integration. You’ll learn what it will take to transform this capability from a “nice to have” into a business-critical integration, and how to support these systems once they’re integrated. |

Creating a Risk Conscious & Security Aware Culture
Location: Room 1E07
Monday, October 1, 2012, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Creating a risk conscious and security aware culture within an organization can provide more protection to an organization’s information infrastructure and associated data assets than any technology or information security related control that currently exists. A risk conscious and security aware culture is the key to protecting an organization’s information infrastructure and associated data assets. Information threats and adversaries are more advanced and daunting than ever and show no sign of becoming less concerning in the future. In order to effectively address this issue, organizations must create and cultivate a culture and environment that embraces information risk management and security as a business benefit rather than another hurdle on the path to success. This workshop will focus on the key concepts and capabilities that should be considered when creating a risk aware and security conscious culture. Approaches, considerations, techniques, and case studies of organizations that are in process of or have successfully created this type of culture will be presented throughout the session as well as discussions of current industry leading concepts and practices.

Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:25 AM-11:45 AM In 2012 IT organizations are five times more likely to cite user experience as a network priority over throughput. This trend is a direct result of the expanding distribution of network assets across internal and external infrastructures, the growing reliance on internet applications in the enterprise, and the increasingly diverse set of application connection and consumption contexts. Building a technology architecture to assure user experience for private and public cloud applications based upon a common policy and intelligence foundation is a top priority for network and IT management teams who seek to build a predictable user experience for all applications, anywhere they are delivered and consumed. |

Disaster Recovery and the Cloud
Location: Room 1E09
Friday, October 5, 2012, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM The proliferation of “everything cloud” leaves plenty of room for new technologies to emerge, and in some cases even fosters the evolution of new approaches that stem from more established ones. One such example is the growing emergence of disaster recovery-as-a-service (or RaaS), a technology that is beginning to take flight as an evolutionary offshoot of Storage-as-a-Service. RaaS is emerging as a key business continuity component for organizations of all sizes. A critical challenge for Storage-as-aService is the time it takes to restore service. While data can be recovered from the cloud, the time it takes to do so can be lengthy. And there’s still the need for a platform to recover to. Redeployment and provisioning of new servers and infrastructure can take time when a crisis has occurred…. too much time. RaaS can be a critical piece in the disaster recovery puzzle, and this presentation outlines how organizations can take advantage of it as a reliable means of backing up, and an efficient means of recovery. |

Standards for Trusted Cloud: How Soon and at What Cost?
Location: TBA
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 12:15 PM-1:00 PM Telecom service providers come to the cloud market having already adopted IT management best practices and security standards to become trusted providers of traditional IT outsourcing services, such as colo and hosting. But it is unclear, in these early days of cloud deployment, whether enterprises will pay more for a standards-heavy, high-performance trusted cloud solution or whether they expect a new generation of cloud standards, aimed at delivering security and resiliency in the multi-tenant, dynamic, and non-geographic cloud realm, but at lower cost. This panel will examine the current state of standards in the cloud market, including the role of industry standards groups, and look at who is driving the standards process.

The Impact of Video on Network Infrastructure
Location: Room 1E07
Friday, October 5, 2012, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM The amount of video traffic running across your enterprise network is almost certainly growing. And you’re probably aware of this growth, but you may not be aware of its true scale, or of the effect it’s having on the performance of the underlying infrastructure. That’s because while some video traffic is enterprise-deployed and approved, some is also likely coming via Skype and other ad hoc applications. In this session, a leading expert on network performance will help you learn, first of all, how to determine the amount and sources of all video traffic on your network. Then he’ll show you how to accommodate and prioritize video traffic so that it doesn’t overwhelm other business-critical applications, and so that the video traffic that itself is business critical receives the treatment it requires. |

Modern Two-Factor Authentication: Defending Against Today's User-Targeted Attacks
Location: Room 1E09
Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 3:30 PM-4:30 PM Since 2005, attackers have gone after users, not systems, to penetrate organizations of any size or sophistication. Credential theft via automated malware, targeted phishing campaigns, and massive database breaches have rendered nearly all security controls impotent in the face of attackers that masquerade as legitimate users. Two-factor authentication demonstrably stops such account takeover and fraud but has been hampered by the cost, complexity, and technical limitations of traditional solutions. In this session, we examine the evolution of two-factor authentication over its 20-year history, and identify the modern innovations that promise to democratize strong authentication as a security measure of first resort. |

As with those shifts, some IT professionals and skill sets will thrive -- and others will become obsolete. Clouds rely on a new set of fundamentals: horizontal scaling, virtualization, multi-provider application hosting, advanced business and orchestration management, and more. In this session, we will cover the technologies that have and continue to emerge to deliver these solutions and the IT challenges that come along with this evolution of services. In addition, recent survey information from Current Analysis on cloud adoption trends, emerging technology concerns, and key market insights will be shared to provide perspective on the global cloud state and buying / adoption behaviors in the enterprise today. |

The Value of Social Business
Location: Room 1E07
Thursday, October 4, 2012, 3:30 PM-4:30 PM Social business systems have been around long enough for most enterprises to have, at minimum, experimented with them, while employees have likely developed a base of understanding about the potential uses for social networking in their personal and business lives. So what do we know about the real value of social to the enterprise—and how does this translate into an understanding of ROI for these products? Which social applications should be considered “table stakes” for any enterprise; which are particularly useful for different vertical industries or job categories; and which are more hype than real? In this session, you’ll get an understanding of which social capabilities are as necessary as basic voice and data services, which have some incremental value, and which are to be avoided as not worth the security or governance risk. |
