New York City always has lots going on, but if you're heading there next week, don't miss all the great activities we have going on at Interop 2011. We'll be focusing on several timely IT trends and issues, but our top billing will be Bring Your Own Device. In fact, if you saw my blog from the past week, Not Your Mother's Connected World, you might remember one of the statistics I cited from our 2011 Cisco Connected World Technology Report: Two-thirds of students (66%) and more than half of employees (58%) cite a mobile device (laptop, smartphone, tablet) as "the most important technology in their lives." This attitude, plus the overall proliferation of mobile devices up the ante for IT managers as they look to find new ways of managing the network.

Is Mobile Device Management Dead?

InformationWeek
I expect the SaaS community will adopt this direction big time, and, again, many IT managers are already sold on the cloud strategy and implementing it even in non-mobile settings. There may even be overwhelming cost advantages to the cloud approach, but I don't think anyone can point to a definitive study yet. OK, I must concede, in the near term a combination of both strategies is likely to be the solution of choice as the rush to implement mobility, largely due to user demand and the assumption of cost benefits via improvements in productivity, charges ahead. And the debate will continue--in fact, we're covering this very important topic (and many, many more) in detail at next month's Interop New York Conference. I hope to see you there.

"CableSolve already had a mobile component when we brought it to market in 2003," Goodison said. At the time it was strictly a Windows mobile component that helped companies manage their connectivity and related assets. In 2011, Cormant added support for BlackBerry, Android and various tablet devices. Next up, watch for Cormant to add support for virtualized server management. An announcement could emerge at Interop (Oct. 3-7, New York).
