2010 Archive: Enterprise Cloud Summit – Public Clouds
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Room 1E07
On Day Two of Enterprise Cloud Summit, we'll turn our eye outward to look at the many public cloud offerings that are leveling the IT playing field. Public cloud providers offer pay-as-you-go economics and tremendous flexibility; but they also create new security, portability, and performance concerns. Once the exclusive domain of web startups, today enterprises big and small are finding ways to incorporate public cloud platforms into their IT strategy. Whether you're deciding how to embrace them or want to learn from what others are doing, Enterprise Cloud Summit is the place to do it.

9:00 AM – 9:30 AM Location: TBA In this session, we'll look at where public clouds are today. In just a few short years, they've gone from unreliable and unpredictable to global and highly available. But are they ready for production code? Is it a one-horse game? What new features and capabilities might swing the balance from private to public? Speaker - Dan Elron, Managing Partner, Technology Strategy, Accenture Mr. Elron is responsible for defining the Firm’s strategy and offerings in a variety of domains, primarily in the technology space. Most recently he has focused on the impact of cloud technologies on the Firm’s businesses. Previously Mr. Elron was the Managing Partner, Growth and Strategy for Accenture’s Technology Growth Platform and the Managing Partner of Accenture’s Communications Industry. He has advised many of the largest companies in the telecommunications and technology industries in North America, Europe and Asia. Mr. Elron is a member of the IEEE and ACM. He also serves as the advisor for the information technology industries for the World Economic Forum. He has degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science and Business Administration from the University of Tel-Aviv and the University of Minnesota. He and his family live in Charlottesville, Virginia.
9:30 AM – 10:00 AM Location: TBA PCs, smartphones, and Web-based services create a fractured personal computing experience, with data and content scattered across diverse devices and online services. To solve this, service providers are building the next form of personal computing: the personal cloud ecosystem. Personal cloud services will include a combination of a data center cloud software platform, browser-based code to enable rich Web experiences, and device-level player or presentation code for richer experiences than the browser can provide. And they will create an ecosystem of complementary software and service providers on top of their own offerings. Speaker - Frank Gillett, Vice President, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research Frank advises tech industry Vendor Strategy professionals, predicting and quantifying growth and disruption in the technology industry. He analyzes paradigm shifts in the economics of the IT industry caused by the emergence of new infrastructure technologies like cloud computing services and virtualization and new as-a-service business models for pricing and provisioning computing solutions.
10:00 AM – 10:30 AM Location: TBA Cloud computing is supposed to save us money as well as time. But early studies show that dedicated machines can deliver better costs for certain applications. In other words, your mileage may vary. Joeseph Weinman, who coined the term "Cloudonomics" and conducts research into the economics of cloud computing, will give us a look at the math behind public clouds and where cloud economics are headed. Speaker - Joe Weinman, Communications, Media, and Entertainment Industry Strategic Programs, HP
Joe Weinman leads a global team focused on strategy and industry solutions for the communications, media, and entertainment verticals in HP’s Worldwide Industry Solutions organization. He is a long-time veteran of the industry, having held positions of increasing responsibility at the world’s largest telecommunications company, and is a frequent keynoter, a prolific inventor, and an author/blogger. He is a well-known cloud computing evangelist, creating “Cloudonomics,” at the intersection of cloud computing, ROI / business value, and economics.
10:30 AM – 10:45 AM | |
10:45 AM – 11:15 AM Location: TBA Once, IT was limited by the time it took to provision and deploy new infrastructure. With clouds, however, we can launch -- and decommission -- entire virtual data centers instantly. This accelerates the cycle time of IT. It's analogous to two other shifts in technology: agile software development methodologies, and the "devops" movement of self-scaling, self-healing architectures. We'll see how the fates of clouds, agile coding, and devops are intertwined, and what this means for IT professionals. Speaker - John Willis, Vice President of Training & Services, Opscode John has over three decades working in the IT trenches managing complex infrastructures. Prior to joining Opscode, he founded Gulf Breeze Software, an award winning IBM business partner, which specializes in deploying Tivoli technology for the enterprise. John has trained more than 10,000 people on IBM Tivoli products around the world and is recognized as an industry expert in enterprise systems management and monitoring. Willis has authored six IBM Redbooks for IBM on enterprise systems management and was the founder and chief architect at Chain Bridge Systems.

4:20 PM – 4:30 PM Location: TBA As we conclude the New York Enterprise Cloud Summit, we'll look at the mainstreaming of cloud computing. Within a few short years, IT won't be asking what it can move to on-demand platforms -- it'll be asking what it has to keep operating on its own. As this happens, the role of enterprise IT professionals will change dramatically. We'll speculate on how this change will happen, and look at what the IT industry can do to prepare for the shift.
