In 1865 Jules Verne wrote From the Earth to the Moon. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong set man's first steps on the moon, a hundred and four years between vision and execution. Today, next generation CIOs are being asked to compress the time lag between ideation and value delivery. Last generation CIOs told camp-fire stories of the terrible things that happened to IT leaders who pursued "build it and they would come" technology strategies. "Anticipate-and-die" they warned. And yet the reality is that CEOs are telling their CIOs to think of what they think BEFORE they think it, and have it ready to go WHEN they think it. We have migrated to an "anticipate-or-die" world.
CIOs have to simultaneously create the new AND manage the old.
CIOs have to create new value AND manage/reduce the costs associated with legacy systems.
CIOs have to be masters of time travel to manage four generations in the work place, and at least three fundamentally different technology time zones:

Legacy Systems About to be Retired
The emphasis during the last two years has been on managing the "technology now". Attention is now turning to creating value in the "technology next".
