UC and VoIP Are Only as Good as the Networks that Carry Them
By Carl Weinschenk
November 4, 2008
IT Business Edge
Network World goes into some of the details of what needs to be done in order for a network to support UC and VoIP. The writer - reporting on a presentation at the Interop Show in September in New York City - says that switches, routers and bandwidth levels have to be optimized to simultaneously support multimedia and data traffic. This, the writer says, is leading vendors to embed more intelligence in these devices. He singles out vendors Foundry Networks, HP, Enterasys, Force10 and Cisco as those who have upgraded their products for this purpose.

Intelligence on Tap

PC World
At the recent Interop 2008 show in New York, I visited with four vendors that happened to be exhibiting - NetOptics, Gigamon, Anue Systems, and Network Critical. There are lots of other tap vendors out there, but these were representative of the current state of the art. I looked at their most fully functional intelligent tap products, sometimes also know as matrix switches -- the Anue Systems 5200 Series Tool Aggregator, the Gigamon GigaVUE-2404 Data Access Switch, the NetOptics Director, and the Network Critical SmartNA 10G Filtering TAP. Show floor conversations cannot be considered a full review or complete comparison, but here are some key observations:

Network Performance Daily
Over the past few weeks we released the results of two surveys we conducted - one at Interop New York in mid-September, and one at IP '08 Expo in London early in October. Both of our results showed that, despite (or because of?) the economy exploding like a common household appliance on Mythbusters, network management spending would still increase for most companies in 2009, and only a few companies would cut IT spending overall.

Here's some notes and links I gathered from my recent trip to the InterOp Expo in New York, in no particular order!
One of the keynote speeches was from the always interesting Tim O'Reilly where he spoke on mobilising people and devices to aid world issues - a topic I found fascinating. He gave some really interesting examples including Washers and dryers at universities Twittering their availability, and Plants instrumented to alert you when they're dry and it's time to water them. He suggested that we can all contribute, and mentioned that Developers may spend less time developing "applications to throw sheep at one another" and more time developing positive ideas for communication

By some sick twist of fate, Interop and VMworld are happening at the same time this week. That creates a real problem for those of us in the space where the application meets the network. Do we go to New York for Interop, which is conveniently next to the Web2Expo, or do we go to VMworld? Many companies, including Zeus Technology, split their executive teams, sending some to New York for stupidly expensive hotels and great food, and others to Las Vegas for slightly less expensive hotels and slightly inferior food, but better gambling. I ran into some of 3Tera's execs at Accel's reception at the Tao Opium Room, and they had the same problem.
