Cheryl Smith is a principal at an expert IT consulting firm that offers services in IT Crisis Management. She has been responsible for the successful turnaround and completion of critical IT projects and ventures throughout the world.
Prior to her work in IT crisis management, Ms. Smith was the CEO of a technology startup company, utility.net. utility.net offered Broadband over Power Line (BPL) networks to the major US electric companies for commercial sale of broadband to customers in their rural territories, and SmartGrid applications for utility use. She was the global CIO for McKesson Corp—a Fortune 15 health care company; the CIO for KeySpan (now National Grid)—one of the largest energy companies in the US; the VP for Strategic Systems at Verizon; and the MIS Director for Honeywell Federal Systems. She was a Principal at Ernst & Young, one of the “Big 6” consulting firms, for 7 years, successfully managing major IT efforts for a number of Fortune 100 companies in the US and around the world. Her initial years in the industry were spent building 3 core systems that remain in use on Capitol Hill (the electronic voting system on the House floor, the House publication system, the cable communication system used by both the House and the Senate) at the U.S. House of Representatives.
She is the co-founder of the CIO Institute, a certificate program for IT leaders at UC Berkeley, Haas School of Business. In addition to teaching and international speaking engagements, her articles on IT problems, issues and challenges—with ‘insider information’ on how to resolve—have been published worldwide. Speaker - Bruce Barnes, President and CEO, Bold Vision LLC  Mr. Bruce Barnes has over thirty-six years of experience as a senior level officer in the technology arena, including very influential roles in Fortune 100 companies. Speaker - Christopher Barber, Former Senior Vice President of Enterprise Strategy and CIO, WesCorp  Chris Barber is the Former Senior Vice President of Enterprise Strategy and Chief Information Officer at WesCorp, a corporate credit union headquartered in San Dimas, California managing more than $30 billion in assets. WesCorp provides Electronic Payment Services, Liquidity and Investment Services to Retail Credit Unions across the US and Guam.
At WesCorp Mr. Barber lead the organization to pursue a paradigm shift in how it leveraged technology. During time there he led his team to implement several new ground breaking technologies enabling them to be the dominate player in their market, 3X the size of their closest competitor.
Prior to joining WesCorp, Mr. Barber served as SVP and CIO for GlobeNet Capital Corporation in Orlando Florida (that eventually became part of the NYSE), an innovative company that built and operated electronic trading systems. He also held leadership positions with Vector Securities as Senior Technology Officer and with Mercer Investment Consulting as the Director of Software Development for their Global Resource Group.
Mr. Barber is an entrepreneurial and visionary leader accomplished at strategic planning, product development, process improvement, and reengineering of key business processes. Speaker - Alan Cullop, Chief Information Officer, Senior Vice President, The TriZetto Group  Alan S. Cullop is currently serving as chief information officer and senior vice president with The TriZetto Group, the leader in healthcare ERP technology solutions touching half of the U.S. insured population. He joined the company in January 2010 and is implementing a business-focused strategy that maximizes the return on IT investments while focusing on operational excellence and improved cost structure. Mr. Cullop’s strategy focuses IT resources on projects that provide competitive advantage. Mr. Cullop brings over 20 years of global information technology and business experience to his current role.
Prior to joining TriZetto, Mr. Cullop served as chief information officer and executive vice president with Berkshire Hathaway’s NetJets, a multi-billion dollar company. He joined the company in 2005 and rapidly positioned technology as a strategic enabler for the business. Through collaboration with business leaders, the IT and business teams collectively delivered projects utilizing advanced analytics, business process reengineering and internal process optimization. The company grew revenues by more than 300% and scaled by 2.5 times effectively during Mr. Cullop’s tenure.
Mr. Cullop was ranked as one of the top 10 CIO/CTO’s in the United States by leading IT Futurist, Thornton May and was recognized by Information Week as 2010 Masters of Technology. Mr. Cullop currently serves on the board of TechColumbus, a leading technology incubator and on the executive advisory committee for the Groundworks Group, a non-profit technology provider for the United Way. Mr. Cullop has served on the Board of Directors of SITA, a diversified global company that provides technology services including applications development and networking in over 200 countries. Mr. Cullop also served on the Board of Directors for Tripeze.com, a Canadian e-commerce company, which was successfully acquired by Sears Corporation. Mr. Cullop also serves on several Technology groups across the country.
Mr. Cullop earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1987 and was a member of the Leadership Forum at The DuPree College of Management at Georgia Tech in Atlanta from 1998 - 2000.
Speaker - Ben Bailey, Director of IT Services, Applied Voice and Speech Technologies, Inc.  Ben Bailey is Director of IT Services at Applied Voice and Speech Technology, a leader in providing Unified Communications solutions through its flagship product, CallXpress. Speaker - Thomas Bakewell, CIO, Riverbed  Thomas Bakewell has been Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Information Technology for Riverbed Technology, Inc since joining the Company in January of 2008. In his role, Mr. Bakewell is responsible for shaping the company's worldwide IT strategy to support the continued growth and the need for real-time collaboration and data access for Riverbed's globally distributed workforce and corporation. Prior to joining Riverbed, Bakewell held a number of executive IT leadership roles at Coherent, Inc., Brocade Systems and Sun Microsystems. Speaker - Paul Barrett, CTO, Psytechnics, a NetScout company  Paul Barrett works for NetScout Systems, Inc., which acquired Psytechnics Ltd. in April 2011. His role at NetScout includes responsibility for their voice and video quality assessment technology. Paul was CTO at Psytechnics prior to its acquisition by NetScout and was responsible for all research, development and standards activities at Psytechnics. He joined Psytechnics shortly after its creation in 2001 and worked for ten years at BT Laboratories before that. Paul has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry and has been actively involved in international standardization for most of that time. His standards work has encompassed many aspects of voice and video communications, including four generations of GSM and 3G codecs. Paul is currently a Vice Chairman of the ITU Study Group responsible for "Performance, QoS and QoE" and is the UK Head of Delegation for this group. He is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the IET and IEEE, and holds a Masters Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of York. |

Location: Lagoon D Server architectures are both changing in response to application deployment models as well as changing how applications are deployed. Everything from multi-core CPU, cache strategies, hardware virtualization support, IO management, and interconnects have an impact on how you deploy applications and has an impact on power consumption and cooling. In this session, you will learn about new technologies in servers and how to integrate them into your data center. You will will be able to differentiate the advantages of blade chassis from rack mount systems and determine when to use them. Lastly, you will understand how IO options impact overall performance and connectivity to the rest of the data center. Upon graduating from Stanford University with a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering, Kurt spent several years as a semiconductor device physicist, doing process design, modeling and testing. He then joined AT&T Bell Laboratories as a memory chip designer and CAD and simulation developer.
Moving to Hewlett-Packard, Kurt started in the laser printer R&D lab doing electrophotography development, for which he earned a patent, but his love of computers eventually led him to join HP’s nascent technical IT group. He spent 15 years as an IT engineer and was a lead architect for several enterprisewide infrastructure projects at HP, including the Windows domain infrastructure, remote access service, Exchange e-mail infrastructure and managed Web services. Panelist - Brian Payne, Executive Director, PowerEdge Server Business, Dell  Brian Payne is the Executive Director of Platform Marketing for Dell’s PowerEdge Server portfolio. Location: Lagoon D A well designed data center is inherently as energy efficient as it can be when it is designed and built, but new technologies and techniques evolve that can significantly improve efficiency. The question that IT struggles with is how to determine which improvements will have the best bang for the buck. Measuring and trending data center power and cooling usage provides a management context to make decisions on where to focus improvements and provides a way to measure the success. Panelist - Martin Olsen, VP Global Sales, Active Power  Martin Olsen serves as the company’s vice president and general manager, leading all multi-channel sales strategies to drive growth and market penetration within Active Power’s 13 trading markets around the globe. In addition to his sales responsibilities, Olsen oversees all global business development efforts to diversify sales channels and expand new revenue streams for the company.
A holder of three U.S. patents, Olsen is a seasoned professional in the datacenter infrastructure markets with more than 13 years of global marketing, product development and business development experience. Olsen previously served as vice president of Global Channels and Business Development for Active Power.
Before joining the company in 2007, Olsen was director of the Data Center Group for Wright Line LLC, a Worcester, Mass. based datacenter infrastructure firm. Prior to that, Olsen worked in the United States and several years overseas in Munich and Singapore, where he led the product marketing and business development charter for APC by Schneider Electric.
He has conducted extensive research in computer room and datacenter power/cooling infrastructure and his research, white papers and interviews have regularly been featured in Computerworld, Information Week, Consulting Specifying Engineer and other top tier industry publications. A regular speaker at some of the more prominent domestic and international tradeshows and events, Olsen has presented on containerized power/cooling infrastructure; datacenter power/cooling inefficiencies; datacenter power quality and reliability; modular power and cooling; and datacenter thermal runaway.
A member of several well-respected professional organizations, Olsen is involved with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), AFCOM, the Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) and 7x24 Exchange. He is also a certified Six Sigma Green Belt.
Olsen received his bachelor’s of Science in Marketing from the International Business College at Kolding, Denmark. He also earned diplomas in Logistics and International Business Law from the International Business College at Kolding, Denmark. Panelist - Mike Higgins, Sr. Vice President, Data Center Services, Internap  Mr. Higgins leads the Product Management, Business Development and Data Center Services Design and Site Selection functions for Internap’s Data Center Services business. He brings to Internap a deep knowledge and 20+ years of extensive financial, product planning and leadership experience in the telecommunications industry.
Mr. Higgins came to Internap in January 2004 as Internap’s Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis. At Internap, he has also served as a board member for the Company’s joint venture with NTT of Japan. In late 2006, Mr. Higgins assumed the responsibility for growing and expanding Internap’s Colocation product offering.
Prior to Internap, Mr. Higgins held numerous leadership roles in Finance, Business Operations and Business Development over an 18-year career span while at MCI. His most recent role at MCI was Vice President of Business Operations. In this role he directed the Sales planning efforts for each of the business market segments. This included product planning, customer acquisition efforts, product line profitability and product integration efforts.
Mr. Higgins holds an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Bridgeport and a B.S. in Accounting from Villanova University.
