Green Initiatives and Programs at Interop Las Vegas 2012

Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) logo

For the very first time, UBM TechWeb and Interop Las Vegas 2011 have chosen to purchase carbon offsets in order to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use and other sources at the conference. UBM TechWeb is working with Bonneville Environmental Foundation, an entrepreneurial nonprofit, to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions for all domestic Interop conferences moving forward.

"UBM TechWeb's support of BEF Renewable Energy Certificates will create enough clean, wind energy to power an average US home for over 9 years. UBM TechWeb's purchase of BEF Water Restoration Certificates will restore over 130,000 gallons of water to critically dewatered streams." - Margie Gardner, Chief Executive Officer, BEF

Please join us in our efforts by offsetting your travel to and from Interop Las Vegas when you register for the conference.

About the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF)

An entrepreneurial nonprofit, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) is creating a more sustainable future by investing now in clean energy and fresh water. Customers who buy independently certified BEF Carbon Offsets and Renewable Energy Certificates support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the development of new renewable energy facilities, while customers who buy BEF's Water Restoration CertificatesTM support the return of water to critically dewatered streams and rivers. All BEF customers and donors support long-term watershed restoration and renewable energy education for students and communities nationwide because BEF reinvests its net revenues to fund its Model Watershed and Solar 4R Schools programs. Since it was established in Portland, Ore. in 1998, BEF has been a pioneer in helping people and companies become better stewards of the environment. Learn more at www.b-e-f.org.

Teacher EXCHANGE logo

For the second consecutive year, Interop Las Vegas 2011 and its exhibitors are donating all surplus materials used at the Conference and Expo to the Teacher EXCHANGE. Surplus materials will be re-used and/or recycled to support local public school education and protect the environment.

About The Teacher EXCHANGE

In 2002, The Public Education Foundation of Southern Nevada created a green initiative dedicated to bringing resources to public classrooms and helping the environment. Since then, the Teacher EXCHANGE™ has provided thousands of Clark County teachers with reusable, recycled and gently used materials and equipment.

The Teacher EXCHANGE™ is a re-use and recycle resource center for all Southern Nevada public school teachers offering learning tools to teachers to enhance projects and curriculum. Donations of new and reusable materials, office supplies, surplus materials, computers, office equipment and furniture are collected from community businesses and individuals and provided at no charge to teachers for use in the classroom.

Through the Teacher EXCHANGE™, The Public Education Foundation has taken a leadership role in workplace sustainability to assist Nevada in reducing the amount of solid waste generated. Each year, the Teacher EXCHANGE™ collects and recycles approximately 50,000 pounds of electronic hardware, paper and other scrap materials that would have been disposed of in local landfills.

Onsite Green Initiatives

UBM TechWeb is committed to fostering sustainability within business communities by preventing and reducing waste our events and educating participants and exhibitors about green technology and practices.

For example, Interop's on-site initiatives to prevent and reduce waste:

  • Water coolers will be used for all meal functions rather than individual bottles.
  • All workshop course material are distributed electronically, rather than printed.
  • Together with Show Manangement's National General Service Contractor, Champion Exposition Services, Interop has taken the following steps to reduce waste of onsite materials:
    • 85% of non-banner show management signage printed on recycled material and will be donated to a local school for use in art projects after the event.
    • Amost all of show management produced banners are produced on biodegradable material.
    • Aisle carpet made of 60% recycled material, with backing made of 100% recycled material. After the lifetime of the carpet, it is shipped to a mill and melted into a reusable composite used for production of liquid tanks.
    • Recycle bins are placed the lobby areas
    • Champion's national floor covering inventory and recycling programs are managed through its carpet depots in Atlanta and Las Vegas. Champion has selected recycling partners that participate in the joint industry-government Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) program in order to help increase the amount of recycling and reuse of post-consumer carpet, and to reduce the amount of waste carpet being sent to landfills. Champion Recycling in Kentucky, recycles the worn carpeting and manufactures the raw goods into PVC piping and septic tanks.
    • Their carpet padding is made from 95% recycled urethane (material from chairs and car seats). It is CRI "Green Label" certified, meeting LEED low emission requirements. They use 20-30 times then continue to use as packing material.
