Breaking Through the FUD – 10 Steps to Secure BYOD
Location: Lagoon E
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM Over the past year, Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) has quickly made the jump from industry trend to business imperative, and organizations are now feeling the pressure to open their networks to employee-owned devices. Unlike corporate-issued devices that are well-managed and under IT's control, BYOD introduces a unique set of security challenges that require a balance of flexibility, visibility and security. In this new era of BYOD, the days of a static, one-size-fits-all policy are over. IT needs to know what devices, where they are, and who the user is so they can provide convenient, secure access to authorized users based on their user profiles and devices. In this session, the presenter will share the ten steps to developing a secure and comprehensive BYOD ecosystem. This session will outline the security and management issues that BYOD introduces to enterprises and share best practices and real-world experiences on the technologies and techniques needed ensure full visibility and control of the network and mobile devices. It will also discuss the personnel and process issues that organizations should examine in order to design an effective BYOD strategy for their organizations. |

IP Coming to Sensors & Embedded Networks Near You
Location: Lagoon H
Friday, May 10, 2013, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM IP, the Internet Protocol, and not IP, Intellectual Property, has long been considered too “heavy weight”, too complicated, too much overhead and just not necessary for sensor networks – the phrase, “I need something more optimized” is often heard or used. The reality today is that IP is not only applicable in sensor network applications, but can be better suited and more efficient than special purpose or “optimized” protocols. This talk presents the current state of available standards such as IEEE 802.15.4, 6LoWPAN, RPL, COAP and provides information on the cost / benefit analysis of IP and the choices at each layer. It is important for engineers and developers to understand the impact of their decisions, to either try to invent their own “optimized” solution, to use another proprietary protocol or to build an interoperable system using IP. Quite often this decision is based on faulty or insufficient information. Additionally there are design choices such as “mesh under” vs “route over” that impacts network design and architecture; TCP vs UDP that affect resource management and COAP vs HTTP that change system complexity. Choosing to insert a gateway to translate from that proprietary solution to IP in order to be compatible with the Internet and its systems is fraught with problems that include maintenance, cost and security. The protocol that has connected much of the World's 6 billion population canand should now be used to connect the World's trillions of devices. |

Communications in the Cloud: Deployment Models
Location: Breakers L
Friday, May 10, 2013, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM As with all other aspects of IT, collaboration and communications is moving to the cloud. But the combination of installed equipment base, policy/security concerns, and cloud’s uncertain ROI/TCO adds nuance to the decision. Most enterprises won’t simply outsource all their communications and collaboration to the cloud, but many will deploy hybrid cloud architectures, and many vendors and service providers are starting to promote hybrid cloud as the most cost-effective first step. In this session, analysts, vendors and service providers will discuss what your hybrid cloud deployment could look like for communications. You’ll come away with various models for architecting a hybrid communications cloud, and with a clear idea of the costs and benefits of the different approaches. |

Location: InteropNet Classroom, Booth 2202
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 4:00 PM-4:45 PM Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is radically different from those old x-clients you may have played with in your youth. Painfully it's been painted by the mistakes made with the early days of Citrix Metaframe and Microsoft Terminal Server, but we can do much better now. The concept of putting an entire virtual machine behind that remote session means that you can have amazingly good remote performance through some careful planning of your virtual infrastructure. Microsoft and Citrix have even gone as far as leveraging a shared graphics processor in the server to allow the heavy lifting of 3D rendering to stay on the superfast bus of the server; giving even resource hogs like AutoCAD Revit 3D the ability to run on iPads or thin clients. |

Beware the Firewall, My Son! The Jaws that Bite, the Claws that Catch!
Location: Lagoon H
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 2:30 PM-3:30 PM Nothing strikes fear into the heart of an engineer more than the installation of a firewall to achieve the laudable goal of defense-in-depth through network segmentation. Security teams demand the implementation of firewalls telling everyone, “It’s for compliance!” But the addition of firewalls and other security appliances (aka chokepoints) into an infrastructure infuriates network engineers who design to optimize speed and minimize latency. Sysadmins and DBAs are equally frustrated, because of the increased complexity in building and troubleshooting applications. So it’s down the rabbit hole we go trying to achieve the unachievable with everyone waxing rhapsodic for those bygone days when the end-to-end principle ruled the Internet. Is it really possible to have security coexist with operational efficiency? Organizations seem happy to throw money at technology and operations, but when it comes to policies and procedures, they fail miserably. This is the biggest problem with building a layered design. As engineers, if we don’t have clear policies as a set of requirements, how will we determine the appropriate network segmentation and protections to put in place? The answer lies in aligning network segmentation with an organizational data classification matrix and understanding that while compliance and security often overlap, they’re not the same. |

Financial Management Skills for the Technical Manager, Day 1
Location: Breakers D
Monday, May 6, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Effective communication is critical to the success of all businesses. For the technical manager-whether internal or external, shared services or level two support-understanding the financial goals underlying in an organization's business strategy is a fundamental component of successful partnerships within an organization. The most successful technical managers engage with their business partners through a shared understanding-and language-of an organization's financial goals and requirements. Honing that understanding by learning the financial terms and concepts involved increases cooperation and provides more opportunity for achieving success. As a business-focused manager, it is imperative to communicate how technical activities translate into financial benefits that impact the business as well as how business strategy can incorporate more effective technical support to achieve its goals. Technical managers can add more value to their organizations by developing an understanding of costing, planning (budgeting/forecasting), accounting, valuing, and communicating that information to the business in financial terms. This course will provide the tools to develop this understanding and explore core concepts such as total cost of ownership, return on investment, and value analysis (all essential to justify changes, prioritize work, and obtain support for initiatives). Who Should Attend? Anyone responsible for managing resources & projects and who needs to improve their financial skills.

BCDR – Leveraging Virtualization for the Biggest Challenge = Biggest Reward for IT
Location: Lagoon K
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM Traditionally, business continuity and disaster recovery have been among the biggest challenges for IT, and the ability to maintain application uptime and provide rapid recovery from disasters has never been more important. And in fact, virtualization increases the vulnerability and risks from server outages by consolidating many workloads on individual servers. At the same time, virtualization has brought tremendous benefits in the area of BCDR and opened up new opportunities for IT to maximize application uptime at lower cost. Both virtual and physical servers can greatly benefit from virtualized disaster recovery, bringing RPOs (Recovery Point Objectives) and RTOs (Recovery Time Objectives) down from hours or days to minutes. This session will discuss ways to leverage virtualization and cloud technologies for backup and disaster recovery for all servers, including how virtualization improves BCDR, how established technologies like replication and backup are evolving and where they fit, and how all of these technologies can be used to protect both virtual and physical servers. |

BYOD, Mobile Security and Mobile Device Management
Location: Lagoon H
Monday, May 6, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM With the explosion of mobile devices and applications in the enterprise and the challenges brought on by bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives, mobility is becoming a key responsibility within IT. The desire to honor employee preferences regarding mobile devices must be balanced with IT’s responsibilities to manage and secure corporate data and systems. While the initial feeling was that adequate management could be extended through push email tools like Microsoft’s Exchange Active Sync or Lotus Notes Traveler, organizations quickly learned that they needed more comprehensive tools like those being offered by the mobile device management (MDM) vendors. However, users continue to discover new mobile threats including those related software vulnerabilities. In planning for their mobility management solutions, enterprises need to address the full range of mobile threat vectors including applications, operating systems, over-the-air snooping, wireless denial of service, and careless user behavior. This program will provide the groundwork for developing, implementing, and maintaining a best practices mobility plan and policy. The major elements involved in ensuring mobile security and management including MDM systems, internal app stores, and self-service portals will be discussed, along with an overall program for how these systems must be developed in line with the specific business goals of the organization. Who Should Attend Enterprise mobility managers or anyone involved in the development or maintenance of enterprise mobility policies for BYOD implementations.

Managing and Securing SDN Deployments
Location: Lagoon H
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 4:00 PM-4:25 PM While excellent progress is being made in proving out the viability and values of SDN technologies, mainstream adoption and deployment will require disciplined approaches to managing and securing them. New or amended practices are needed across the lifecycle, from planning and deployment through monitoring and troubleshooting, in order to move SDN beyond proof of concept and into the mainstream. This includes establishing new levels of coordinated policy management, recognizing new entity relationships, and handling a much more dynamic managed environment. This session will provide a detailed review of SDN management and security issues and best practices, based on practitioner-centric research conducted by EMA.
Network Monitoring Fabrics: Decision Points
Location: Lagoon H
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM The use of packet-based monitoring for IT operations and security is on the rise, and increasingly these tools are deployed behind network monitoring switches (a.k.a network packet brokers). But there are a number of choices among switch technologies, and ample confusion regarding which is best and for what purposes. Should you seek fixed appliances, or chassis-based solutions? Are these tactical elements, or strategic fabric components within management architectures? What levels of automation are available? What levels of integration are necessary? In this debate-style panel, Jim Frey of Enterprise Management Associates will lead a lively discussion among senior network monitoring switch technologists to look at the pros, cons, and major decisions points for selecting monitoring fabrics. |

Three Pillars of Accelerating Security to Keep Up to Speed with the Business
Location: Lagoon E
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 2:30 PM-3:30 PM Your organization wants to move fast, but security is complex and you may often feel like you are slamming on the brakes. This is exacerbated by new paradigms for IT adoption, where users and non-technical departments are deploying systems directly, bypassing IT and security altogether. This presents a huge challenge in terms of understanding what you have and how it’s being used, and protecting the organization becomes nearly impossible. In order to accelerate your security, you need visibility in three main areas: your IT environment, your users and the real threats you face. Only by fully investigating and understanding these pillars can you know your true risk posture and identify the necessary measures to mitigate and protect. This session will discuss how contextual insight into what's happening in your information security environment will enable you adapt to whatever obstacles rise up in the road, so your organization can go as fast as it needs. Attendees will learn how to can gain a clear view of your environment, your user activity, and the threats you face. |

Location: Lagoon E
Friday, May 10, 2013, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM This session will cover the practical considerations that security managers or practitioners should be aware of regarding the current state of E-discovery law, from both pre-litigation policy and post-litigation points of view, including those potentially problematic areas where best practices are still developing, such as the impact of BYOD on e-discovery and data security and the use of automated decision-making tools, such as predictive coding. This session will also provide a framework to manage the expense of the process through the development of the specific facts needed by outside counsel to make limiting arguments. Such arguments include proportionality (balancing the burden of e-discovery against its value in a particular case); proving the validity of your efforts through sampling; quantifying burden; identifying and raising the inaccessibility of repositories; and issues relating to cross border e-discovery. |

What Workspace Choices (Virtual, Cloud, Mobile, BYOD) Do We Really Need?
Location: Lagoon K
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM Workers today want choice – the ability to use their own tablet, smartphone, laptop… to access corporate applications and desktops remotely, search the Web without restriction and download data using any device. A few years ago, this was considered the exception but today, it is essential if companies want to attract the best and brightest in their industry. But how do you support this brave new world, and balance security and control of corporate assets vs. end-user demand choice and a changing workplace culture? Building and managing the right infrastructure for today and tomorrow may seem daunting and fraught with challenges so how do you know if your organization is ready? This session will explore key considerations to ponder when planning your workspace strategy for desktops, applications, cloud and BYOD. |

Practical Steps from Virtualization to the Software-Defined Data Center
Location: Lagoon K
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 2:30 PM-3:30 PM There are two trends leading to the next transformation of the datacenter. First, the proliferation of virtualization across datacenter hardware and software is modernizing the datacenter. Second, changing business needs are demanding faster response from IT. These trends are leading to a new approach – the software-defined datacenter – where all IT infrastructure services are virtualized and delivered as a service, and the control of this datacenter is entirely driven by software. But how do you go from virtualization to full achieving a software-defined datacenter? What are the necessary steps organizations need to take to realize this transformation? What does the journey look like? What are the operational challenges and roadblocks, and the major decisions that business will need to make? What are the right investments and when is the right time? |

Photonic Circuit Switching In Data Center Lowers Latency, Improves Throughput
Location: Lagoon H
Friday, May 10, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM The time is now to consider photonic circuit switching technology in data center networks. Adding photonic circuit switching as an access layer between IP core routers and top-of-rack switches can dramatically improve application performance through reduced latency, and better accommodate large, high-persistence data flows. Photonic circuit switches based on advanced 3D MEMS photonics use tiny mirrors to switch up to 320 light signals, providing the port density needed to build flat data center networks. In a hybrid circuit/packet switched network design, bursty traffic goes through the packet-switched network and more persistent flows are directed to the circuit-switched network. The result is an improvement in latency and virtually unlimited network bandwidth for persistent flows. This is thanks to the reconfiguration of circuit switch data paths to provide connectivity and capacity to match traffic flows. This network can also be controlled through the use of software-defined network (SDN) controllers that reside outside of the network elements to provide better global control and management of the network. |

A CISO's Perspective - Enhancing Visibility and Response to Provide More Effective Information Risk Management and Security
Location: Lagoon E
Thursday, May 9, 2013, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM Despite all of the investments that organizations have made in their information risk and security programs in recent years, there are typically two profiles that exist in the world today - those who know they have been compromised, and those who have yet to realize it. For many organizations, it is no longer a matter of if but when their defenses will be successfully infiltrated and systems compromised. The increasing frequency of public disclosures and non-stop global news headlines concerning cyber security is proof of this impending reality. Most organizations have been heavily focused on building taller wider walls thinking they can keep the adversaries out, but this is clearly not proving to be a successful strategy. There is obviously a need to do something different than the current overweight focus on prevention as the primary defense. This session is intended to provide one CISO's perspective of how he is adjusting his approach to be more balanced by demonstrating the value of shifting some focus away from a prevention strategy and investing more in enhancing visibility and response capabilities |

What Is Software Defined Networking and What Impact Will It Have on Your Network?
Location: Lagoon H
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new approach to networking that has the potential to fundamentally change how IT organizations implement branch office and data center LANs as well as wide area networks. The initial definition of SDN focused on the decoupling of the network control plane from the network forwarding plane and the centralization of the control functionality in a controller. The early definition of SDN also tended to focus L2 and L3 functionality. However, as is typical of emerging technologies and new approaches to networking, there is currently somewhat of a broadening of how the industry, particularly vendors, define SDN.

How the SF Giants Rode Innovation to a World Series Victory
Location: Mandalay Bay D
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 10:30 AM-11:15 AM Innovation is often a major catalyst for success, and the Major League Baseball World Series Champion San Francisco Giants embody that notion. The Giants have won two of the past three World Series, sold out nearly every game during the past three years, and are well positioned to continue this amazing trend. But a baseball franchise is a small corporation, and every aspect of that entity has to be working in unison, innovating at every step of the way. Giants CIO Bill Schlough, InformationWeek's Chief of the Year for 2012, embraces and accelerates innovation inside the organization, working with baseball operations, ticketing, marketing and every other facet of The San Francisco Giants. Those Giants have taken huge risks, technology wise, including dynamic ticket pricing, high speed WiFi, data analytics and more. And much of the Giants' success can be traced to the organization's technology risk taking. We'll delve into these innovations, and more, and we'll talk to Bill about how the Giants build innovation into their culture. |

Network Infrastructure for Cloud Computing
Location: Breakers F
Monday, May 6, 2013, 1:00 PM-4:30 PM The ossified concepts of traditional VLAN-based data center networking are a poor fit to the dynamic world of server virtualization and cloud computing. The networking and virtualization vendors have responded with a plethora of incompatible solutions, ranging from overlay networking (example: VXLAN and NVGRE) to large-scale layer-2 fabrics (example: FabricPath, QFabric and VCS Fabric) and VM-aware networking (example: IEEE 802.1 Qbg). Not surprisingly, each vendor touts its particular (and usually proprietary) solution as the best one to solve your networking infrastructure challenges, forcing you to make a set of tough choices when designing or deploying the network infrastructure for a private or public cloud.

Not surprisingly, each vendor touts its particular (and usually proprietary) solution as the best one to solve your networking infrastructure challenges, forcing you to make tough choices when designing or deploying the network infrastructure for a private or public cloud. This vendor-agnostic session will briefly revisit the networking needs of server virtualization and IaaS cloud computing and describe the benefits and drawbacks of overlay virtual networks as compared to traditional VLAN-based solutions (including VM-aware networking technologies like 802.1Qbg). The second half of the session will focus on architectural and scalability aspects of individual solutions from major virtualization vendors and emerging startups.
IPv6: It's High Time to Get Started
Location: Lagoon H
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM The facts are unambiguous: half of the world has depleted its public IPv4 address allocation pool, with the other half facing the same fate in the next few years. Securing the Business
Location: Lagoon E
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Information risk management and security is as much an art as it is a science. The adversary community has evolved their approach to integrate innovative capabilities such as social concepts and business process knowledge into their attack techniques and technologies to increase their likelihood of success. They are also becoming more protective of their knowledge and capabilities and no longer freely advertise their capabilities in the name of research or status achievement. Organizations have also evolved and matured their approach to their defenses to incorporate new capabilities into their arsenal that include improved risk and security intelligence, advanced security technologies, broader education, and enhanced business alignment. And so, the epic battle between good and evil continues with no clear winner in site. The constant changing and evolving landscape of attacks, adversaries, regulations, and compliance requirements has forced many organizations to aggressively implement best effort capabilities to meet their immediate needs that often operate on a challenged and reactive basis. By using a risk based and business aligned approach to design, implementation, and operation comprehensive and proactive programs and their associated capabilities can be easily introduced, sustained, and matured within organizations. This workshop will explore the current state of information risk management and security and where it is evolving to in order to continue to meet the business requirements and demands that are ever present. Topics will include the development of a strategy, frameworks and capabilities associated with an information risk management program, and key areas of consideration when evaluating risk management and security programs and capabilities. This workshop will utilize interactive discussions, examples, and cross industry case studies throughout to provide examples of discussion points as well as identify and explore current and evolving industry-leading practices associated with information risk management and security. Key Takeaways
Key Elements of an Information Risk Profile
Location: Lagoon E
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM Information risk has become a top-of-mind issue for many business leaders and information risk management security (IRMS) professionals. These two groups have historically had challenges interacting with each other due to a natural resistance driven by a misunderstanding of each other’s activities and motives. For example, business leaders recognize and embrace the need to take risks and often incent their constituents to take them as well in order to achieve business goals. Conversely, IRMS professionals are charged with minimizing risk and ensuring their organization’s information infrastructure and associated data assets are properly protected. The best way for both of these parties to reduce friction and meet their individual requirements is to mutually develop and maintain an information risk profile that they both can use to guide their respective activities.
What’s Next? Emerging Trends in Information Risk Management and Security

The State of the Movement of SDN, OpenFlow, and ONF
Location: Lagoon H
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 2:30 PM-3:30 PM Software Defined Networking (SDN) has revolutionized the networking industry through its capability to facilitate direct, real-time programming of network functionality. It is considered one of the most promising and disruptive technologies that enables customization, optimization, and improved operations. Since 2011, the Open Networking Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the commercialization and use of SDN and OpenFlow, has spearheaded the movement and seen its membership grow from approximately 20 to more than 80 companies. Within the Foundation, there has been technical progress of SDN and the OpenFlow Protocol, including the release of updated versions of the standard, prototype demonstrations, interoperability experiments, and product announcements, as well as newly chartered technical initiatives and working groups to accelerate deployment of the protocol. With ONF evolving from a stable OpenFlow base, the organization is increasing its attention to a number of other important aspects of SDN that bring real value to users. Among these are advances at the switching and transmission layers, means of introducing OpenFlow to existing networks, and the hugely valuable software constructs above OpenFlow. In this session, ONF will describe where this movement is headed in 2013 as ONF reinforces its commitment to bringing the benefits of SDN to network users and operators worldwide. |

As such, innovation isn't for a high-and-mighty committee. It takes collaboration among people across the company – IT, marketing, sales, HR and other key stakeholders. In this session, executive leaders will discuss how deep collaboration led to specific innovations at their companies.

Business Interoperability (BOP)
Location: Breakers L
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM Business interoperability goes under the name of several big trends: the API economy, the cloud-driven enterprise and software as a service. The ability to design and deploy applications created from outside sources meshed with inside capabilities will redefine the concept of applications. While the application may get the headlines, it is the infrastructure underlying those applications which will define success. Disaster recovery, privacy, security, compliance and infrastructures that mix virtualized internal resources with cloud-based infrastructures represents a new model for the IT manager. Interoperability is quickly moving up the infrastructure stack and IT managers need to understand how that model will change their underlying technology architecture.
Mobile First
Location: Breakers L
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM Within five years the primary way your company's employees and execs, your customers and your suppliers will interact with your firm will be via smartphones. Those smartphones will be purchased outside of your budget, will run on networks you don't control and will contain both corporate and consumer applications. You will be responsible for creating the network that will deliver your company's information securely, creating an applications model that meshes inside and outside resources in a modern user interface and is always available 7x24. Thinking mobile first is the biggest IT infrastructure change since the Internet and you won't get a second chance for success. How to evaluate the devices, the network infrastructure and the new application models for your company will be a major IT priority. |

Five Essential Steps to Mitigating Insider Threats
Location: Lagoon E
Friday, May 10, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM This talk gives the findings of the first-ever global insider threat study that catalogs common practices used by leading organizations across numerous verticals and geographies. We detail how leading organizations combine executive, HR, legal and technical strategies to hinder rogue and compromised insiders. Insider threats are a major threat to business today--taking IP and data. In a recent survey, 70% of employees plan to take sensitive business data with them when they leave their job. Nearly 50% of employees feel they have rights to corporate data and IP. Pinpointing the source and scope of data theft is often hard to quantify, especially since the largest internal threat may actually be one of your most loyal employees. Our talk presents the findings of the first-ever global insider threat study that catalogs common practices used by leading organizations across numerous verticals and geographies. We detail how leading organizations combine executive, HR, legal and technical strategies to hinder rogue and compromised insiders.

Softening the Network: Virtualization, The Final Frontier
Location: Lagoon H
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM Virtualization rules the cloud. No longer do we discuss servers, CPUs, and disks, but instead instances, v-cores, and ephemeral volumes. Software abstractions have already replaced hardware appliances everywhere except the network, so now it’s time to get serious about virtualizing that final frontier. The cloud transforms large and dynamically-extensible collections of relatively homogenous compute engines into sophisticated on-demand data processing systems. It’s natural to extend this thinking, and replace traditional network hardware devices with sophisticated traffic-processing software. In addition, it becomes easier to create a meta-control plane that allows for easier dynamic provisioning and coordination of those software entities. Crucially, it’s important to deliver traffic-processing capabilities that can be integrated into the DevOps paradigm, since that’s an increasingly important style of delivering applications. |

Enterprise Cloud Summit - Private Clouds
Location: Mandalay Bay D
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Whether you're just starting your cloud journey or enhancing your existing cloud landscape, the odds are that a private cloud will figure heavily into your planning. Unfortunately, most enterprises will take a slipshod approach to a private cloud development, often slapping a simple web-based front-end on a well-worn virtualization environment and calling that a private cloud. The result is often an environment that over-promises and under-delivers, causing business users to seek other alternatives. To succeed where others have failed, you'll need to create a top-notch strategy.

How to Keep Video from Blowing Up Your Network
Location: Breakers L
Friday, May 10, 2013, 10:15 AM-11:15 AM Everyone expects video traffic to continue to grow within the enterprise, but for those running the communications network, this trend is potentially dangerous: Especially in the case of ad hoc video usage like Skype and YouTube, end user video usage is not being centrally rolled out, managed, and controlled. But even when video is a part of a controlled rollout—say, of a Unified Communications portal like Microsoft Lync—you may not have a clear sense of how much video will actually be used. So do you overprovision the network, possibly devoting more resources than are needed? Or do you risk a situation where video traffic swamps the network and hinders the performance of mission-critical applications? In this session, we’ll offer suggestions to help you walk the fine line of provisioning for video in a world where video’s future is still in flux. |

Communications in the Cloud: Deployment Models
Location: Breakers L
Friday, May 10, 2013, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM As with all other aspects of IT, collaboration and communications is moving to the cloud.

Big Data Myths and Real Decisions
Location: Breakers L
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM Big Data has a lot of attention right now and not surprisingly its fair share of hype. Wouldn’t it be great to hear from and interact with a wide array of professionals who live in the Big data world every day? We put this workshop together knowing that cutting through the hype involves starting with healthy skepticism. From there, we’ll look at the Big Data ecosystem and understand just how many systems and people are affected by the challenge. Getting to the details will look at how software and hardware need to be carefully considered before starting any implementation. We’ll finish the workshop by looking at specific, popular use cases that will allow attendees to go home with a solid understanding of what can be applied to their own enterprise. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 11:15 AM-12:00 PM What is innovation exactly--how do companies define it? And what is the CIO's specific role in seeking and vetting ideas and organizing, cultivating and funding innovation? Is innovation a repeatable process or more of an ad hoc outcome? Which technical and other skill sets are needed? Who are the key stakeholders within the C-suite and elsewhere? How are CIOs tapping external partners and vendors? Must the CIO become a de facto chief innovation officer? Our panel of senior business technology executives, all of them at the center of their companies' innovation programs, discusses what works and what doesn't based on their experiences. |

Enterprise Mobile Apps
Location: Breakers F
Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 8:30 AM-12:00 PM The mobile landscape grows fragmented on a daily basis, so integrating in a complex enterprise environment might seem nearly impossible and leads to many questions: Should my app experience overlap my web experience? Should I create a mobile web site, native web application, or a hybrid approach? Should I develop a mobile app for phones, tablets, or both? What platforms should I target? Who can help us develop our idea? What processes should we follow internally? These questions can seem almost paralyzing to a key enterprise decision maker.

E-Discovery in 2013
Location: Lagoon E

The Great Appsec Debate: Static Vs. Dynamic Vs. Manual Penetration Testing
Location: Lagoon E
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM Software applications are an integral part of 21st century business processes. The majority of software is still installed in-house, either as specially developed custom applications or commercially acquired packages. However, the proportion of software procured as a service is on the rise, as is the use of mobile apps and open source components. In addition, more and more in-house applications are being web-enabled and exposed to the outside world. Regardless of its origin, the vast majority of software will contain flaws which can constitute a security risk, especially for those applications that are web-enabled. The cost of fixing a flaw increases the later that they are found in the development, acquisition and deployment life-cycle. This presentation will explore how businesses are deploying software and what measures are in place for checking the security of applications. This discussion will present new research conducted among US and UK enterprises from a range of industries to assess the scale of the software security problem, the ways in which it can be mitigated, the extent to which this is being achieved, the costs involved and how these can be minimized. |
