I believe I got an inkling of this movement at Interop in Las Vegas last week. The questions from the audience had much less to do with basics of voice over IP, or tactical decisions around technology replacement. Instead, there seemed to be a clear sense that Unified Communications was supposed to do something fundamentally different for your enterprise; the question that remained was, well, what exactly does UC do for me? Communications decision-makers will need to be ready with the answer that applies to their enterprises.

Today it takes roughly 500 hard disk drives to keep up with a state of the art "quad quad" (16) core Pentium-based server. Interop: Pricing the cloud is an ongoing challenge
By Jon Brodkin
May 20, 2009
ComputerWorld
Cloud computing is taking off in large part because the delivery of IT services and infrastructure over the Web offers better pricing and more flexible pricing options. That, at least, is the theory. But what if cloud pricing models are so confusing that IT shops end up paying more than they expect?
Slideshow: Products shown at Interop
These issues related to cloud pricing models were tackled at Interop Las Vegas Tuesday morning in a panel of vendors moderated by Allan Leinwand, a venture partner at Panorama Capital.

Application Delivery Blog
The first session I moderated on Tuesday morning was on Application Performance Management (APM). The panelists were from NetQoS, CA and Fluke. I find this to be a very important topic because I strongly believe that all that a company's business managers really care about is the performance of a handful of applications that they use to run their business unit. All of the infrastructure components (e.g., LAN, WAN, SAN, servers, OSs, firewalls, WOCs - you get the idea) are just a means towards an end.

Best of Interop 2009 Winners Announced, any surprise winners?
By Larry Chaffin

Network World
With over 160 products vying for recognition, trying to decide the top winner for BOI is always a challenge. Interestingly enough, the choice for Best of Interop this year became a knock-down, drag-out challenge between two companies whose products actually fit hand in glove. Cisco's new UCS and the newest iteration of VMware's venerable virtualization platform, vSphere 4 were top-flight contenders to the very end. Though it was almost a chicken and egg argument, our BOI winner - vSphere 4 emerged as the winner because of its outstanding innovation, industry-wide impact and substantial improvement over previous generations.

SaaSkatoon
Interop is here, and based on the preparatory discussions that I've had with fellow panelists on the 'Honeymoon and Divorce: Changing SaaS Providers' session, I am excited about the topics we will be covering and the insight that Jerry Smith (Symphony Services), Rick Nucci (Boomi), and R "Ray" Wang (Forrester) will be bringing to the table. I will be approaching the topic of migrating both data and SaaS code / logic from PaaS providers with a service-oriented mindset, giving real world examples of migrating applications from the now-defunct Coghead platform to the Force.com platform by salesforce.com. Delivered Innovation migrated both customer apps and our own strategic marketing suite of applications to Force.com over a period of several months with great success. I am confident that the panel will provide a great deal of value to attendees, as the topic of SaaS / PaaS "lock-in" is becoming more relevant with the proliferation of cloud computing services.

In contrast, electricity is a standard, fully interoperable, and generally homogenized.

Although she dodged the question at the end of my podcast interview (below), Arista Networks CEO Jayshree Ullal can't help but think that history is going to repeat itself. FollowingCisco (NSDQ: CSCO)'s acquisition of Crescendo Networks in the '90s (where she worked), Ullal ended up working for Cisco for 15 years. Notwithstanding its newly announced Intel-based blade servers, Cisco usually prefers to buy than build. If everything Ullal says about Arista's 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches and "the cloud's" appetite for them is true, she'll probably end up at Cisco again (by way of acquisition).

My first guest for this episode? Interop head honcho Lenny Heymann.
