LifeSize of Austin TX had a really clever approach to the classic problem of the trade show booth. They took the people who rarely get out of the office (the inside sales professionals) and dressed 'em up in trade show uniforms and flooded the boundaries of the booth with talkative and friendly customer-facing people. Each had a similar story - they knew the products, listened to what your requirements were and delivered the next step of the qualification process.

Microsoft Learns Interop Is About Interoperability
By Mitchell Ashley

Network World
Microsoft had three big themes during their appearance at last week's Interop 2008 conference in Las Vegas; interoperability, Network Access Protection (NAP) and Unified Communications. Yes, I said interoperability. Over and over again I heard mention that so many were surprised by Microsoft's open stance (pun intended) towards interoperability between Microsoft, partner and other third-party products. What was surprising is that I heard it from network equipment, security and software companies alike. Are Microsoft's actions matching up to their words? It appears so.

I'm sure competing solutions exist (or maybe not -- you tell me). But this year's Interop marks the first time I've ever seen an intelligent patch panel: one that drives the visibility into your network another layer deeper than the visibility that might normally end with your routers and switches. The offering -- a Best of Interop finalist -- comes from Panduit, and about the only thing I can imagine coming next might be intelligent RJ45 jacks. Actually, after I finished my video interview with Panduit's Mike Pula (below) and sarcastically mentioned that idea, he didn't laugh and said the idea actually solves a problem.

Live (Again) From Interop: Workshop A Success, But No Takers On Craps Lessons
By Howard Marks
May 1, 2008
InformationWeek
The worst news from Interop is that my fat old body just can't handle the things I did easily 15 years ago when I made a living teaching 5-day NetWare administration seminars. My Disaster Recovery Cookbook workshop went well, with 80 of my now-closest friends spending the day listening to me pontificate on the relative merits of Cemaphore Systems' MailShadow over Double-Take or WANsync. I, however, was a wreck at the end of the day. Even more disappointing, no one took me up on my offer of free craps lessons. The show seems to be recovering from a few years of dot-com bubble hangover, with bigger crowds of both vendors and attendees than I remember from the last two years.

So the show is open, the booths are built, and the crowds have descended on the exhibitors. My first impression: Wow. If trade show attendance is any indication of an industry's heath, then data networking is heading toward a boom. I haven't seen a computer-industry trade show floor look this good in at least six years. People are talking purchases, exhibitors are showing lots of new products, and everyone seems to be in a good mood (as opposed to the the grim, depressed feeling that ruled for a while). Some quick observations:

BlueCat Networks is hoping to drive the point home that now is the time for enterprise companies to upgrade their IP address management systems by equipping its Interop booth with a simulated golf driving game and by having, er, caddies on hand to help out show attendees improve their game. Booth workers of the female persuasion are donning a common uniform that is one part Catholic schoolgirl and one part old-time golfer. With argyle sweaters and socks, and mini-skirts asking passers-by "Who's your caddy?" Interop: Palo Alto Networks' Firewall Identifies App Traffic On Content, Not Ports
By David Berlind
April 29, 2008
InformationWeek
You've programmed your firewall to block the ports that some unwanted app is using and that app turns up on your net again. Net-enabled applications don't tie themselves down to one port the way the Web (HTTP, port 80) and other apps do. After some firewall shuts their ports down, they find another port. Using traffic profiles instead of ports to identify more than 600 applications, not only did Palo Alto Networks' series win InformationWeek's Best of Interop in the security category, it took the grand prize as well. In the video below, Palo Alto's Lee Klarich walks me through some of the firewall's innovations.

It's not as bad as it sounds, but ...

It's that time of year again, trade-show season! Interop has always been one of my favorites- I guess it's the technical roots of it. Interop started back as Networld and Interop. One more of a trade show, the other an interesting technical challenge and exercise. Back when Interop started no one was certain which protocols would win, whether bridging or routing was the way to go, whether it would be Ethernet, ATM, Token Ring, or FDDI/CDDI to the desktop, etc. What Interop did was force multiple vendors to work together to build a network to support the show floor in a matter of days. There were also interoperability tests of new protocols and such between multiple vendors hardware, software, protocols, etc. In the end it became a gathering place for 20,000+ network professionals to see what worked, what didn't, hear about the latest and greatest...
